I believe the universe had a plan for me to be an artist. According to my mother, I was drawing since I could hold a pencil. As I got older it actually became a bit of an issue with her because that’s all I wanted to do! But apparently life had a different plan for me and I became a teacher. So for many, many years my artistic talents were used to create classroom materials and bulletin boards. Awesome bulletin boards, by the way. Then one day, my call came again and that time I listened.

All my life experiences and roles have shaped who I am as an artist today. They have created a concern for the human condition that is reflected in my art. My passion for beauty in all it’s forms, is reflected in my paintings. I find grace and beauty in the human body and the perplexity of facial expressions fascinate me. Non traditional portraits painted the classical way are my favorite. I specially love painting expressions that capture an emotion that will provoke thought and introspection in the viewer; and somehow create a connection.

However, I’m not always in charge! As my work becomes an expression of my spiritual and emotional growth I often end up surprising myself with a piece. My art then becomes my journey of self discovery and renewal, my compass, my healer, my confidant, my teacher, my lover. Sometimes, I’m inspired by images that evoke a strong emotional response in me. And so I write poems to decipher the messages I receive from those images. Then the words and the images become my painting.

I believe that we are mirrors of each other. We endure the same struggles and transformations. It’s always comforting to know we are not alone. I hope that my paintings and my poems resonate with the viewer and brings them that feeling.

SIREN Baroque kicks off its third season with Fyer, Fyer!, the first of four concerts exploring the ancient elements, in a special collaboration with the innovative baroque dancers Laura Careless and Marisol Cabrera. The program features blazingly passionate works by Morley, Monteverdi, Rebel, Scarlatti, and Handel, all of which use fire as a metaphor for nature’s wrath, spiritual zeal, lustful ardor, or the terrors of hell. With SIREN Baroque’s “impassioned performances” (Early Music America) accompanied by strikingly seductive choreography, it promises to be an evening to ignite the senses.
