Statement

Humorous surrealism is my main theme, with work usually done very spontaneously. The results can have multiple possible interpretations, or, just be enjoyed for the absurdity. My work frequently features birds, chickens, and imaginary monsters, often in desert landscapes. Acrylic painting, drawing, and sculpture are my usual media.

Biography

Making art has been a passion since early childhood. The concepts of my work have changed little since then, though I like to think an art degree and decades of personal and job related art experience have sharpened my skills! For a number of years I made my living painting theater sets, trade show displays, and faux finishes for an interior design firm. The fast pace, large quantities of painted surfaces, and wide range of materials we worked with, gave me a lot of practical experience.

I blog about my art, and have dipped my feet in the Print On Demand route, where artists offer reprinted products featuring their work. These days, I mostly focus on showing and selling my work locally.

Click the 'Galleries' image below to see a few examples of my work. I'll try to keep this updated with changes periodically so that they're not all sold pieces. My blog has an inventory list with available pieces.

Small, affordable works by multiple artists, just in time for the holidays. Most of mine will be about 4 x 4 in. in this show. Any work not sold will remain in the gallery for awhile after the reception, probably most of December. It's 'cash and carry' so you can take your purchase with you right away.

One night show. You can take your purchases with you right away. 70-some artists, all small pieces, great for holiday shopping. I'll be taking several miniature pieces, approx. 4x4 in, with deep edges, so they can sit on a shelf, or hang. Affordably priced.

First Friday, and Third Friday art walk nights, and possibly other dates by appt. For this show I painted a scene reminiscent of Fragonard's "Swing" classic, only a cat version. It is painted on the back of a recycled guitar from a thrift store.

I will be showing roughly 20 pieces in Sept 2016, along with Carlos Rausch. Since Mr. Rausch is a musician, it was serendipitous that before I knew he'd be my show partner, I found some vintage sheet music in a thrift store and had begun to use some as backgrounds in paintings! I will be showing monsters and birds, not sure what else! Mr. Rausch is an abstract artist. I hope to see you there.

I have two pieces in this group show, Gods & Monsters, that runs thru June 25th 2016. One piece, a painting titled "Deep," has sold. A mixed media piece on paper, framed, titled "Sinister," is still available at the gallery. Also, I regularly have some miniature pieces in the gallery's gift shop. I have a show coming up at this gallery in the fall of 2016, details not in stone yet!

Date is slated for last 2 weeks of Sept, opening for the 3rd Friday art walk Sept 16, however, details can be found on my blog in case of changes: https://cindyschnackel.wordpress.com/ Fatal Farm is my view of animals, and what I guess they may think of us. It is this thinking that made me decide to stop eating them a few years ago. I could no longer view my cockatiel as being different from the rotisserie chickens I was buying from the grocery store, and of course the choice wasn't to eat my pets, but to think of all animals as companions, not dinner. A life long animal nut, I've always found animals amusing and special. I regret it took me so long to give them up as food!

Animals and how I see them, and imagine they may see us. Several years ago after a lifetime of calling myself an animal lover, I realized the vegans were right, and I joined their ranks. When the idea for this show hit me, I knew my style would never wrap itself around a fully serious message, so the humor in this is dark at times, but it's still 'me.' Vegan or not, I hope that if you're in Phoenix in September, you'll come to Fatal Farm, (as well as my two person show at Olney also in my Events).

The mural sections from past Phoenix Festival of the Arts murals are going to be offered at this handy one day sale. I sold my section one year, but there is still one of mine left, a surreal cactus that is 4 x 4 feet. All sections are $300; part of it funds the arts here, part goes to the artist. More info on my blog, where you can also read about other shows and events I have going on. https://cindyschnackel.wordpress.com/2017/03/09/mural-sections-from-past-years-on-sale-at-phoenix-center-for-the-arts/

SIREN Baroque kicks off its third season with Fyer, Fyer!, the first of four concerts exploring the ancient elements, in a special collaboration with the innovative baroque dancers Laura Careless and Marisol Cabrera. The program features blazingly passionate works by Morley, Monteverdi, Rebel, Scarlatti, and Handel, all of which use fire as a metaphor for nature’s wrath, spiritual zeal, lustful ardor, or the terrors of hell. With SIREN Baroque’s “impassioned performances” (Early Music America) accompanied by strikingly seductive choreography, it promises to be an evening to ignite the senses.
