The boundaries to break are those preconceptions that we bring to our vision. We so often see what we expect to see. My work appears to be images of leaves, plants, and foliage. We see it all around us, all the time. I accentuate the edges of the images, scramble the layers of depth perception, and play with the light and color to break through habitual seeing to the vision of reality that I can only catch a glimpse of when I am still.
The biology, fractal design, and stunning beauty of plant systems are what draw me to these complex natural forms again and again.

Debra Claffey is a visual artist who uses encaustic, oil, and mixed media in her work. Raised in Connecticut, schooled in Massachusetts, she now lives and works in New Boston, New Hampshire. SIREN Baroque kicks off its third season with Fyer, Fyer!, the first of four concerts exploring the ancient elements, in a special collaboration with the innovative baroque dancers Laura Careless and Marisol Cabrera. The program features blazingly passionate works by Morley, Monteverdi, Rebel, Scarlatti, and Handel, all of which use fire as a metaphor for nature’s wrath, spiritual zeal, lustful ardor, or the terrors of hell. With SIREN Baroque’s “impassioned performances” (Early Music America) accompanied by strikingly seductive choreography, it promises to be an evening to ignite the senses.
