Nature and how we relate to it is the central theme of my work. In my acrylic paintings and mixed-media works on paper, I combine traditional painting techniques with found imagery to create landscapes that tell a story. My landscapes vary from arid desert to surreal tropical gardens, since they are based on places I have been or want to go. But in every one, the real subject is how we interact with the natural world. Elements of civilization creep into each scene without dominating it.
The way sky, land and subject interact is an important element.

My process is to paint from my collection of photographs taken during my travels. In addition, I hunt through estate sales and antique shops to source anonymous photographs of forgotten, outdated products, erotica or hackneyed illustration techniques. The found imagery combined with painting function both as formal elements and as commentary on our society.

Building on innovations in collage by well-known painters such as Matisse, Rauschenberg, and Schwitters, and also inspired by the appearance of assemblage in the styles of painters such as Kahlo, Polke, Kitaj and the New Liepzig School, I hope to combine painting with collage in my own unique way. Through my work, I employ fragments of what we leave behind as a civilization to address the materialism of our age and celebrate nature.

SIREN Baroque kicks off its third season with Fyer, Fyer!, the first of four concerts exploring the ancient elements, in a special collaboration with the innovative baroque dancers Laura Careless and Marisol Cabrera. The program features blazingly passionate works by Morley, Monteverdi, Rebel, Scarlatti, and Handel, all of which use fire as a metaphor for nature’s wrath, spiritual zeal, lustful ardor, or the terrors of hell. With SIREN Baroque’s “impassioned performances” (Early Music America) accompanied by strikingly seductive choreography, it promises to be an evening to ignite the senses.
